Process improvement is a critical organizational function that involves engineering, assessing, defining, piloting, and implementing processes in order to produce a positive impact on the overarching business. A process improvement initiative is a complex organizational change effort that requires effective work, political, and/or cultural systems to accomplish its goals. At Fraunhofer, we apply an empirical paradigm to an organization’s specific context in defining the appropriate processes, measuring and analyzing the effects of those selections, and packaging the resulting knowledge for reuse and evolution. A typical process improvement project includes the following steps:

Define and plan improvement effort
Prepare and deploy initiative infrastructure
Engineer and implement process
Lead and participate in informal and formal assessments
